S.S. SAVANNAH (1819-2019)
22 MAY 2019 - 12 JANUARY 2019
BY ROBERT MORRIS
2019 marks the 200th anniversary of the SS Savannah's groundbreaking trans-Atlantic crossing. In recognition of this monumental achievement, Ships of the Sea Museum is delighted to present the works of Robert Morris, Savannah artist and Senior Director of Corporate Communications for the Georgia Poets Authority. On 22 May 2019, (the day in 1819 when Savannah left her namesake city for her trans-Atlantic crossing) Robert Morris will unveil two eight-foot canvases in the Museum's lower atrium. The mural-sized paintings capture not only the era and international intrigue that followed the first ship to ever cross the Atlantic by steam engine, but help to shed light on what her accomplishment means for international trade today.

THE SHADOWS OF SCARBROUGH HOUSE:
MATERIALIZING THE DANGEROUS WOMEN WHO LIVED & RULED HERE
SEPTEMBER 2019 - JANUARY 2020
For 200 years the luxurious mansion designed by William Jay on Savannah’s “Court End” has been held as the “William Scarbrough House” when it was actually owned and operated by two Scarbrough women: Julia Scarbrough (William’s wife), and Charlotte Scarbrough Taylor (their eldest daughter). Mother and daughter were both strong-minded and independent – two qualities not necessarily appreciated in the “fairer sex” of the 19th century. Given their departures from the 19th century's socially accepted gender role for women in the South, they were often portrayed by their male contemporaries in a one-dimensional fashion – of little substance or depth, but dangerous.
The exhibit, “The Shadows of Scarbrough House: Materializing the Dangerous Women Who Lived and Ruled Here,” examines the one-dimensional legacy of Julia and Charlotte Scarbrough provided us via the social and patriarchal biases of their time. 19th century silhouettes will be implemented to represent this legacy overlaid with historic and contemporary quotes which when looked at with contextual insight and without a 19th century prejudice will provide a deeper meaning - materializing the women for who they really were.

GAELYNN LEA IN CONCERT
6 DECEMBER 2019
Ships of the Sea is pleased to announce our first annual benefit concert. This year we are featuring Gaelynn Lea, singer-songwriter and activist for disability rights. Proceeds from this concert will go to Rooted in Rights.
Gaelynn Lea won NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Contest in 2016, and she’s been on the road ever since playing her unique mix of haunting original songs and traditional fiddle tunes. So far the singer-songwriter and violinist has appeared in 43 states and 7 countries – she’s graced the stage of renowned venues like Nashville’s Music City Roots, The Kennedy Center and House of Blues Chicago.
Gaelynn Lea performs from her electric wheelchair. She began playing the violin 25 years ago after a creative music teacher helped her to adapt a playing style that suits her frame. Lea holds her instrument like a tiny cello and loops her classically trained rhythms and melodies with her Memory Man pedal to create a “symphonic cacophony that is both glorious in its reach and profoundly introspective”. (Collins de la Cour, Ear to the Ground) Her original songs explore the contrasting nature of existence – dark and light, birth and death, anger and forgiveness, sorrow and joy. Gaelynn Lea’s “music is imbued with a melancholic poetry so potent it must be heard to believed.” (Isaac Feldberg, Boston Globe)
In addition to performing and recording, Gaelynn also does speaking engagements about disability rights, finding inner freedom, and accessibility in the arts. In recent years, she has used her music as a platform to advocate for people with disabilities and to promote positive social change.

CROSSING HORIZONS
15 JANUARY 2019 - 21 APRIL 2019
BY CYNTHIA KNOTT
In the spring of 1819, the Steamship Savannah began an historic voyage which would usher in a new era of oceanic travel. By way of the first trans-Atlantic voyage via steamship, Savannah spanned the horizon between the age of sail and that of steam. In recognition of the 200th anniversary of this historic event, Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum is pleased to offer the works of internationally acclaimed artist Cynthia Knott whose exhibit “Crossing Horizons” examines the existential essence of horizons crossed and the profound vastness of those yet traversed. Described as an “alchemist” whose paintings “border on the symphonic,” Knott is a two-time recipient of the prestigious Pollack-Krasner Foundation Grant, whose work has appeared in over 70 national and international exhibits, with recognition in publications such as Architectural Digest, The New York Times, and The New Yorker.

ON THE WATER AND BENEATH THE WAVES
A MOVEABLE FEAST LECTURE
18 APRIL 2019
Mark your calendars for our season finale of The Moveable Feast 2019 series, where Drs. Kurt Knoerl and Jennifer Sweeney Tookes will be presenting "On the Water and Beneath the Waves." This presentation will highlight Coastal Georgia's maritime culture and heritage. Dr. Knoerl will explore how shipwreck sites often act as accidental time capsules, not only containing narratives of a vessel's demise, but also information about its crews, passengers, and shipbuilders. Dr. Tookes will trace how Coastal Georgians recount their lives on the water, paying particular attention to those communities that connect to the state's fishing industry and the stories they have to tell.
And we'll also have a special guest to introduce to you: Georgia Southern's new president, Dr. Kyle Marrero, who plans to be in attendance. You'll have a chance to mingle with him and his family, as well as our distinguished speakers at the reception that will follow immediately after the lecture.
As always, this event is free and open to the public. Please bring your friends!
