Ships of the Sea Museum is pleased to present the works of photographer Stephen Morton. A nationally recognized photojournalist and official photographer for the Port of Savannah, Stephen Morton is accomplished at capturing candid and honest moments of realism. For “My Still and Quiet Voices” Stephen expands his view into the abstract, transporting the viewer on an unexpected exploration of the port’s “industrial landscape,” and into the splendor of the known and unknown.

THE SHADOWS OF SCARBROUGH HOUSE:
MATERIALIZING THE DANGEROUS WOMEN WHO LIVED &
RULED HERE

For 200 years the luxurious mansion designed by William Jay on Savannah’s “Court End” has been held as the “William Scarbrough House” when it was actually owned and operated by two Scarbrough women: Julia Scarbrough (William’s wife), and Charlotte Scarbrough Taylor (their eldest daughter). Mother and daughter were both strong-minded and independent – two qualities not necessarily appreciated in the “fairer sex” of the 19th century. Given their departures from the 19th century's socially accepted gender role for women in the South, they were often portrayed by their male contemporaries in a one-dimensional fashion – of little substance or depth, but dangerous.
The exhibit, “The Shadows of Scarbrough House: Materializing the Dangerous Women Who Lived and Ruled Here,” examines the one-dimensional legacy of Julia and Charlotte Scarbrough provided us via the social and patriarchal biases of their time. 19th century silhouettes will be implemented to represent this legacy overlaid with historic and contemporary quotes which when looked at with contextual insight and without a 19th century prejudice will provide a deeper meaning - materializing the women for who they really were.

2019 marks the 200th anniversary of the SS Savannah's groundbreaking trans-Atlantic crossing. In recognition of this monumental achievement, Ships of the Sea Museum is delighted to present the works of Robert Morris, Savannah artist and Senior Director of Corporate Communications for the Georgia Poets Authority. On 22 May 2019, (the day in 1819 when Savannah left her namesake city for her trans-Atlantic crossing) Robert Morris will unveil two eight-foot canvases in the Museum's lower atrium. The mural-sized paintings capture not only the era and international intrigue that followed the first ship to ever cross the Atlantic by steam engine, but help to shed light on what her accomplishment means for international trade today.
