About the event

Comics Meet Maritime History

Comic Currents celebrates the art of sequential storytelling found in comics, graphic novels, and zines.

The event is inspired by our current exhibition Drawn to the Sea: Maritime Stories from Savannah, where comic artists reinterpret historic ship models from our ballroom gallery. Throughout the afternoon, guests can explore artist tables, talk with creators about their process, and see how visual storytelling transforms maritime history into imaginative new worlds.

Comic Currents is designed to be welcoming for visitors of all ages. Whether you're a lifelong comic reader, an aspiring artist, or simply curious about how stories are told through illustration, the event offers a relaxed and creative environment to explore.

Spend the afternoon discovering comics, meeting artists, and enjoying the museum’s galleries and gardens.

Organized in Partnership with Neighborhood Comics

The event is organized by Lee Heidel of Neighborhood Comics, whose work supporting Savannah’s independent comics scene has helped connect artists and readers throughout the city.

Comic Currents is organized in collaboration with Neighborhood Comics, Downtown Savannah’s comic book specialty store. Located just steps from Forsyth Park, Neighborhood Comics is known for its wide selection of new comics, graphic novels, back issues, and collectible books, as well as a welcoming space for readers and creators alike.

Through events like Comic Currents, Neighborhood Comics helps connect local artists, storytellers, and comic fans with the broader Savannah community. Their passion for sequential art and independent creators makes them a natural partner for celebrating the storytelling traditions explored in Drawn to the Sea: Maritime Stories from Savannah.

Visitors who discover a new favorite artist at Comic Currents can continue exploring the world of comics at Neighborhood Comics, one of Savannah’s go-to destinations for graphic storytelling.

Comics as storytelling

Learning Through Sequential Art

Sequential art—the storytelling technique used in comics and graphic novels—combines images and words to create powerful visual narratives. At Comic Currents, visitors can explore how artists use panels, pacing, and illustration to bring stories to life.

The event builds on the themes of our exhibition Drawn to the Sea: Maritime Stories from Savannah, where contemporary comic artists reinterpret historic ship models from the museum’s collection through illustrated storytelling.

Guests of all ages will have the opportunity to see how ideas evolve from sketch to finished comic, discover the creative process behind visual narratives, and gain a deeper appreciation for the art form.

What is Sequential Art?

Sequential art is the practice of using a series of images to tell a story. It is the foundation of comics, graphic novels, and many forms of visual storytelling.
